Mozart’s trio for the unusual combination of clarinet, viola and piano is richly mellow throughout, contrasting strongly with the mysterious and mercurial quality of the violin sonata written by Debussy near the end of his life. Bartok’s love of Debussy’s music can be sensed in his extraordinary “Contrasts”, another unusual trio combination, composed in New York for the great violinist Joseph Szigeti and jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman, with Bartok himself at the piano.
Mozart – Trio for viola, clarinet and piano in E Flat, “Kegelstatt”
Debussy – Sonata for violin and piano
