Messiaen:
Vingt Regards sur L’Enfant-Jésus (complete)

“A shout of joy on the brink of the abyss”: composer, pianist, visionary and believer, Olivier Messiaen saw the worst that the 20th century had to offer, and responded with music of cosmic beauty, exuberance and colour. This immersive three-day series of performances revolves around the epic cycle Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus: but pianist Cordelia Williams is also joined by other major exponents of Messiaen’s music to bring one of the last century’s most innovative and life-affirming composers brilliantly into focus. For information on other events during the three days, click here. This festival follows Cordelia Williams’ project Messiaen 2015.

After Hours: Connesson (follows the performance of Connesson by the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, 7.30pm)
With Emma Richards, viola

Connesson: Initials Dances
Ravel: Valses Nobles et Sentimentales
Connesson: Constellation de la Couronne Boréale (for viola and piano)

A concert featuring two pieces by French composer Guillaume Connesson and a classic work by one of his influences, Maurice Ravel. The three Initials Dances from 2001 demonstrate Connesson’s varied influences. They are named ‘R’ for Rameau, ‘S’ for slow in a passionate minuet and finally ‘FK’ for Funk in a wild, rhythmic piece. More dances follow, with Ravel’s elegantly sensual waltzes, written in homage to Schubert in 1823. Connesson’s 2007 piece ‘Constellation Corona Borealis’, said to be where the souls of kings, poets and musicians seek refuge after death, mixes a glittering ascension and a descent into darkness.

Cordelia Williams – one of Britain’s most exciting young pianists – presents this classical recital with a difference. Inspired by the Art Cafés of Vienna and Paris, she created Café Muse in London to make classical music a lot more sociable, performing in bars and cafés and getting rave reviews. Her first Café Muse event in Nottingham was a sell out and a total hit. After that we couldn’t wait to bring her back, and this time she’s joined by violist, Emma Richards, to perform music by Schumann, Brahms and Britten. As before, there will be plenty of chances to chat with the performers in between items, and you can also enjoy delicious sharing platters of tapas which you can pre-order before the show (at a discount) or on the evening.
